Stephen Cox

Stephen D. Cox is Professor of Literature and Director of the Humanities Program at the University of California, San Diego. Cox’s scholarship is wide-​ranging. Much of it has concerned the life and work of Isabel Paterson: He has written a biography of Paterson, The Woman and the Dynamo: Isabel Paterson and the Idea of America (2004), edited a collection of her writings titled Culture & Liberty (2015), and wrote the introduction to the 1993 Transaction Publishers printing of Paterson’s The God of the Machine. His other works include The Titanic Story: Hard Choices, Dangerous Decisions (1999) and The Big House: Image and Reality of the American Prison (2009). Cox has been an editor of the journal Liberty since its 1987 founding, and became its editor-​in-​chief in 2005.
